Final Exam Questions!

In the interest of saving some time, I am giving you the question in advance so that you can prepare for them and NOT memorize them.  This is against my better judgement since I believe Summit 1 students should be able to answer any questions on the spot without much preparation.

You should try to think of some key points to the answers rather than trying to memorize them.  what I often find is that students who memorize stumble because they can't recall, which forces them to pause and lose points.

Good Luck!!!

Students will roll a die to choose the questions at random:

1. Talk about the people and organizations you would or would not give money to.  Explain your reasons.

2. Where do you draw the line on being beautiful? What procedures would you consider and wouldn’t consider? Why?

3. What does your clothes and your style say about you? Why?

4. What do you think young people can do to avoid being affected by the messages they get from advertising, TV, and the movies? What can they do to be more satisfied with the way they look and to develop their self-esteem?

5. What is more important to you-a person’s beauty on the outside or on the inside? Explain.

6. In your opinion, how should people behave in public places? Do you think it’s important to speak up when people behave inconsiderately in public?

7. Have you or someone you know ever volunteered for some kind of community service? How do you personally experience a sense of community?

Have a great day!!!

A woman fighting back against A&F!

She comments that A&F sells XL And XXL for men but not for women which sends a strong message about "fat women".  Take a look and see what she says.

Abercrombie & Fitch under fire again!

A&F appears to be popular among young adults in Korea but did you know that A&F is under fire again by the very things CEO says?  For starters, you have never seen a fat person wear A&F clothes because they don't make XL or XLL clothes!  Why? Because the CEO does not want any fat people wearing his clothes so they simply don't sell them. Also, A&F has been known to sell sex to teens and young adults by exhibiting provacative models who are barely clothed in their advertisements.

Second Writing Assignment

For those of you getting a head start on writing your second paper, you may choose to write about any topic of your choice! I would like to learn what kinds of issues are most important among Korean university students. Just remember to use the five-paragraph essay style format as the first writing assignment with a clearly stated thesis-the focus of your paper. Remember, your thesis statement should drive your paper!

Remember to capitalize after a period. Use a spell check. And please type your names.

Good luck!

Affirmative Action challenged in court

Should race (or ethnicity) be a factor in deciding your college or university admissions criteria? What do you think?

Official TOEIC Certificates

If you took TOEIC at an official TOEIC center and have a score from them, you need to make two copies, one for me and one for room #109 at GILC.  They need to have a copy of your Official TOEIC Certificate as well as me.  So don't forget to do both!

Hang in there everyone!!!!

It's already week 9 this week!  We're half done and have half more to go so hang in there!  If you'd like to come see me about anything, this is the time to do so instead of waiting to have a conversation at the end of the semester.  Often times, students come see me at the end of the semester when it's too late. If you are concerned about anything, have questions about your grades, or would like to know how you're doing, please make some time to come talk to me.  I'm here to help you!

I will be at the Global Zone this week from 12:30-2:30 waiting to help students.  However, if you'd like to come and talk with me during this time, please come and sign up for a time slot before it gets filled. You may even be able to call in advance to reserve a time slot.

I'm really looking forward to having some fun in the next half of the semester! I'm working hard to still learn your names so please be patient with me. Let's let loose and have some fun!

Attention: Midterm questions are open for your viewing!

In an effort to be fair, I have reconsidered and have made the decision to allow everyone to see the midterm questions.  Please use it to prepares your supports and such but it should not be used to memorize your answers.  I find that students who memorize often do not do well because they often forget what they memorized, pausing to remember.

Also, from the listeners perspective, it's very monotonous and boring because the speech lacks feeling and enthusiasm.  Good luck on your exams and see you all next week!!

Please do not send "쪽지" from e-class!

Hi guys and gals!

I hope everything's going well! It's week 7! I just wanted to ask you not to send me a "쪽지" from e-class because I do not check the website everyday.  Part of the reason is because everything is written in Korean and I have a hard time navigating through the site since I don't understand it.

If you need to send me a message, please sent it to: sashadaisy123@yahoo.com as I check this e-mail several times a day!

Good luck in your studies!

2nd Writing Assignment (Don't forget to do the 1st writing assignment first)

Living close to Seoul , one of the most populated  cities in the world,  it’s hard to find people who greet one another while walking down the street or having someone hold the elevator while you’re just  a few steps  away.  More increasingly, everyone desires to express their freedom of self to do what they wish in public without any regard for others. However, everyone must still get along and survive in the same community.  What, if any, social responsibilities do you think each person must exercise in order to improve the daily functioning of our society? Where do you see the biggest need for change in our society? Where does our individual freedom and expression stop? Where does social responsibility to the community start?

Remember to use the 5-paragraph essay format.  Your essay must include an introduction and a conclusion paragraph with supporting body paragraphs.  Don’t forget to clearly state your thesis statement, which will help you drive your essay.  Also keep in mind that while each paragraph could stand alone, they also should run smoothly from paragraph to paragraph.

There is no word limit, however, please keep the essay to one-page! Good luck!

A unique sound by 장기하's 싸구려 커피 (cheap coffee)!!!

We continue to talk about different kinds of music in Unit 2. Listen to this guy who seems very serious but hilariously funny in his lyrics.

-ing and -ed adjectives (participial adjectives)

I hear many students say "I"m boring" but this is incorrect!  You are probably "bored" by something or someone so you are actually the receiver of the feeling.  The correct way to say this is: "I"m bored (by this movie)."

Just remember this rule:
-ing = the cause of the feeling OR the giver of the feeling.
-ed =the result OR the receiver of the feeling

There's also this great video to help you decipher the differences.  Enjoy!

Only for those of you without the Activebook CD

If you don't have your homework CD (Activebook CD), as an alternative,  you may choose to do ALL the questions from the Workbook instead of writing a summary or borrowing an Activebok CD from a friend.  I've uploaded the workbook on this blog so if you'd prefer to do that, that's an option open to you all.

**Attention: Nursing students only**

Attention Monday & Wednesday nursing students!  Here's the sign-up sheet for your speaking midterms. See you all there!

Attention: Global Business Administration Majors

If your major is 글로벌경영학과() (Global Business Administration), I have some good news for you! You are exempt from taking the Mock TOEIC exams. Your grade will be calculated accordingly.

For those of you without Activebook homework CDs!

There are some of you with old textbooks without the Activebook CD.  You can either borrow a CD from a friend to do the homework or you can choose to watch the unit videos at the www.gachon.ac.kr website to write a 100-word (half a page) summary about the video.   If you should choose to write a summary, your homework will be graded and not checked for completion like the Activebook CD homework.   Also, if there are any students  with the Activebook CD but wishes to write a summary instead, feel free to do so.  This way, it’s fair for all the students!

**Remember to send your homework via e-class!!!
